Not All Shoes Are Built the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions in footwear is that quality issues come from “bad factories.”
In reality, many issues come from something much earlier:
The construction method itself.
Different constructions behave very differently in production and under the customer’s foot.

Strobel Construction (Most athletic shoes)
* Upper stitched to a thin fabric board
* Glued to outsole
Strengths:
* Lightweight
* Flexible
* Comfortable
Risks:
* No internal forgiveness
* Any bump, rivet, or misalignment → felt immediately

Cemented / Board Lasted (Common casual & dress)
* Upper lasted over a rigid board
* Outsole glued
Strengths:
* Stable structure
* Easier to control shape
Risks:
* Delamination if bonding fails
* Less flexibility

Cupsole Construction (Sneakers)
* Upper stitched or glued into a molded rubber cup
Strengths:
* Durable
* Good sidewall stability
Risks:
* Bonding issues at foxing
* Shape distortion during lasting

Blake Stitch
* Upper stitched directly to outsole
Strengths:
* Clean, lightweight
* Flexible
Risks:
* Water penetration
* Stitch failure = total failure

Goodyear Welt
* Upper + welt + outsole stitched system
Strengths:
* Extremely durable
* Resoleable
Risks:
* Complex production
* Higher cost
* Requires skilled labor

Each construction doesn’t just change how the shoe is made.
It changes:
* what can go wrong
* where defects show up
* how the customer experiences the product

You can’t inspect quality the same way across different constructions.
A Strobel shoe fails through:
