First time in a new factory? What to look for during that quick 30 minute tour.

Here’s what to pay attention to:

1. Flow on the Line
- Is the line moving with rhythm, or does it stall and restart.
- Are materials staged intentionally?
- Is work-in-progress / rejected area controlled? Are there stacks of rejects?

The flow tells you whether production is planned or reactive.

2. In-Line Quality Controls
- Where are the quality checkpoints?
- Are inspectors embedded in the process?
- Are defects being corrected in real time?

Quality built into the line always outperforms quality inspected at the end.

3. Development Connection
- Is the sample room connected to production?
- Do the patterns, materials, and construction details translate cleanly into bulk?

Consistency starts long before bulk production begins.

4. The Defect Area
- How are rejected pairs handled?
- Is there documentation? Root cause tracking?
- Is the conversation about blame — or correction?

The way a factory treats its defects says a lot about its maturity.

5. Leadership on the Floor
- Are supervisors present and engaged?
- Is communication calm and direct?
- Does the team know what they’re building — and why?

Operations reflect leadership.
