The day before a factory inspection can be… interesting.

Suddenly the production floor becomes perfectly organized. The machines are cleaned, the defect boards look perfect and supervisors appear everywhere.

Throughout my years walking production lines, I’ve learned something important:

Sometimes you’re not seeing the factory... You’re seeing the performance for the inspection.

I’ve seen situations where:

• Workers are temporarily moved from other lines
• Defective product quietly disappears before inspection
• Documentation suddenly appears for processes that weren’t followed the day before
• Production areas are cleaned just hours before the audit

Most experienced QC people eventually learn the same lesson:

Quality isn’t revealed during inspections. It's revealed during normal production days when no one expects you to show up. That’s why some of the most valuable factory visits are the ones that aren’t announced weeks in advance.
